Disability Discrimination Act

Impact Communications (Wales) Ltd can help your company make adjustments and changes to help you comply with the Disability Discrimation Act by using:

Over two million people in the UK today cannot read the average sized print of 12pt due to sight loss. Over one third of those with a visual impairment cannot read any print.

Compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act means that service providers are under a legal obligation to make rational and logical adjustments for customers with a visual impairment. It makes good business sense to make all your customer information available in alternative formats.

Braille

Many sighted people do not understand that Braille literature has an immense range of styles and quality. Braille readers appreciate a good quality document and as such, that document should be a first class production.

Impact Communications (Wales) Ltd makes use of up to date Braille production technology and offers a layout and design which is widely accepted by the Braille reader. All documents are bound according to particular requirements i.e., tagged, covered, stapled etc.

Audio

There are many visually impaired people who wish to receive their documentation on tape.

Impact Communications (Wales) Ltd also provide a transcription service on standard audio cassette or CD providing an alternative to print. We can also provide Welsh language cassettes/CD.

Impact Communications (Wales) Ltd can produce a master recording to be used for duplication as well as producing one off recordings such as correspondence and other literature.

Any pictures or illustrations are explained and made clear and where corporate image is required all tapes can be packaged using the company’s labels etc.

Large Print

The typeface used is just as important as the size. From many fonts which are available there are only a couple of fonts which are proven to be the most suitable and ideal for people with a visual impairment.

Quite often sighted people assume that a person who is registered blind can see nothing and therefore can only read Braille. However, this is not true.

Many registered blind people are partially sighted and are able to read print literature with their residual vision. Many older people also have difficulty reading standard print – they just do not see as well as they did when they were younger. Enlarging print size using a photocopier is not acceptable to people who need large print. It lowers the standard and by using larger paper it can make it awkward to handle. It also compromises company standards.

Visual impairment varies a great deal and as such and to help as many people as possible we use font sizes which are generally accepted for those with a visual impairment. However, we are able to use smaller or larger sizes according to a customer’s requirement.
